The town of Bolivia, located in Brunswick County, has a rich and unique history tied to its name and development. Settled by European Americans in the 1890s, Bolivia was incorporated in 1911. One theory about the town's name suggests it originated from shipping boxes labeled "Bolivia," referencing the South American country, a name that residents grew fond of. Its post office, operational since 1892, further solidified the name.
Geographically, Old U.S. Route 17, known as Old Ocean Highway, runs through the heart of Bolivia, while the modern U.S. Route 17 bypasses it to the northwest. This bypass, built to accommodate increased traffic, initially caused an economic downturn by diverting visitors and commerce from the town center. However, the relocation of Brunswick County's seat from Southport to Bolivia in 1977 revitalized the town, attracting businesses and stimulating economic growth due to its role as a government hub.
Today, Bolivia serves as a key connection between Wilmington, 18 miles to the northeast, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, 53 miles to the southwest, blending its historical charm with its significance as a modern center for governance and transportation.
